This current pandemic has changed many of our experiences, including our perception of time.

How does this happen and what can we do about it?

// A thread//
What is the experience of time?

Objectively speaking time on this planet will pass at a linear rate.

However, our subjective experiences of time are very much influenced by our emotions and activities.

This is one of the reasons we all experience time differently.
-Time flies when you have fun-

Our emotional state of mind influences our perception of time.

Feeling good will make time pass more quickly while feeling bad will have the opposite effect.
Why does this happen?

The lock-down leads to a lot of negative emotions like anxiety and depression. This makes time slow down.

On the other hand, days are more monotonous and there are fewer daily novelties. This makes chunks of days go rather fast.
How does this impact your brain?

Our brain is anxious about the sudden changes. We still need to process this "new normal".

We struggle to find good sustainable routines.

We struggle to manage our time effectively. This can give the sensation time is going slowly.
How to get back in control with time?

1. Focus on your natural circadian rhythm. Go outside in the morning to signal your brain it is time to wake up.

2. Stay connected. Don't get trapped in feelings of loneliness and despair. Try to stay in touch with your network.
3. Have a strict sleep schedule. Or at least a strict waking up schedule. Don't sleep in but set your alarm, have a coffee, and take a walk outside in the morning before you start your work.

4. Do something new every day. Challenge yourself and create some new memories.
5. Become mindful of the now.

Become more self-aware of how you feel during the day.

Give more awareness to otherwise monotonous activities.

Focus on the importance of living in the present.
Finishing words:

Most people feel now like the individual days are going really slowly, while weeks are passing by rather quickly.

With this 5 techniques you will get back control over your time:

1. Nature
2. Connection
3. Sleep schedule
4. Novelty
5. Mindfulness
