I wish they’d included all ED visits in Fig 1.

Because: other than #COVID19 - visits for acute mental Health & substance use crises were ALL we were seeing.

(I’ve discussed, & others have documented, the strange drop in acute visits for other causes)
But the truth is, our doors are the place of last resort for lonely folks.

And without efforts to fix that, we will continue to put bandaids on souls.... which, at some point, fall off.
Takeaway:

“ED care seeking shifts during a pandemic, underscoring the need to integrate #mentalhealth, substance use, and #violence screening and prevention services into response activities during #publichealth crises”... and always.
As we begin to plan for a post-pandemic world —- let us not forget this lesson:

Violence and mental health and substance use are fatally intertwined with all the rest of it.
