I see a lot of posts suggesting building rapport in remote therapy is not possible to the same degree & I’m genuinely confused. I have a fantastic connection and rapport with my therapist developed 100% on the telephone. Am I that unusual? I absolutely love telephone therapy.
And also I have a 2nd therapist I used to meet in person and now see only by telephone and telephone is so much better for me. Maybe something’s wrong with me but the connection is strong in both instances. And that’s for complex trauma.
The connection is strong and deep. I’ve never had an issue with rapport. I get it won’t work for everyone but it stuns me when there’s a suggestion that it can’t be done well. I’m living breathing proof that it can be done extremely well. I couldn’t be happier with the connection
That said, I’m really upfront about what’s going on with me. My therapists and I discuss it. I narrate a lot of what’s happening physically. It’s an incredible connection. It may not be for everyone but it’s absolutely possible for it to be as good or better for some.
So it just bothers me when people suggest it can’t be done well. It can. My therapy relationship is very healing. I’m not missing anything. That said my therapist is amazing, and we just happen to connect really well.
I believe the therapist’s skill is a major factor here. I have HUGE faith in mine & that trust was a key factor. But if phone therapy weren’t available I never would’ve been able to connect with a therapist. I couldn’t have started out in person. It would have been a non starter
So I’m not saying everyone should do it but seeing people say it’s not okay for trauma surprises me because it saved me and I have severe complex trauma. I wouldn’t have felt safe in person. Phone has been fantastic and safe.
