THREAD: stress + rest = growth.

The most useful mental model for sustainable success I've come across in over 10 years of research and practice coaching executives, entrepreneurs, and athletes.

On sustainable success, peak performance, and career advice:

👇👇
Stress: a stimulus that presents a just-manageable challenge. Too much is no good. Not enough is no good.

-Pick an area of your life. Where are you now? Where do you want to be? What is the next logical step?
-Think 7 of 10, where 1 is going through motions and 10 is anxiety.
Stress: another way to think about the right dose is to select something where the challenge ever so slightly exceeds your current skills.

Examples:
From blog to published article
From 20lbs to 25lbs
From managing a team of 10 to a team of 12
From training for a 5K to a 10K
Rest: this is when growth and adaptation occur.

We tend to think of rest as something passive but it's actually an active process.

When we rest:
-Our bodies get stronger
-Our brains get smarter
-Our emotions get processed

Rest is not separate from the work. It's part of it.
Rest: not just body, but mind too.

Sleep is a non-negotiable for all. If you're searching for health and performance but sleeping less than 7 hrs a night start there.

Otherwise, think of rest as task-switching, for example:
-Exercise for knowledge worker
-Reading for athlete
Stress and rest both operate on micro and macro cycles.

Examples:
Micro
-20 to 90 minute blocks of deep work
-Short breaks throughout the day
Macro
-Working on a book project, preparing for a big event
-Taking a vacation (or otherwise extended easy period) after finishing above
Stress + Rest = Growth.
-Too much stress not enough rest you get injury, illness, burnout.
-Too much rest not enough stress you get complacency, stagnation.

A model for sustainable success in nearly everything—individuals, relationships, organizations, even entire societies.
