On reddit, someone asked why the Swift project wasn't compiling a free pony for all comers.
I attempted an answer:

One of the ways that modern technology companies shape the assumptions and goals of information technology as a sector is by creating their own languages and frameworks. You can DEFINE how people make code if you have the resources to incentivize it.
The strategic benefits are huge. While it's important for Apple to have robust tooling to meet their ravenous goals for growth and innovation, that's just one upside to setting the terms of the conversation.
It also impacts how you recruit and develop people.

Facebook can hire a bunch of people who already know their technology stack! They don't need to spend a dime on training individuals. They publish a bunch of materials on their technology, frame it as THE way to solve web apps, and get a pool to train itself up.
Computing languages are political and commercial artifacts. They bear the imprints of the incentives that animate their sponsors.
Are they teaching this shit to the youth in between the algorithms and data structures lectures?

Makes me wonder. What would a language/library built and maintained by a government this decade look like?
What tasks would it be optimized to solve?
What initial use cases would it be deployed for?
Laughing to imagine a http://pre-Healthcare.gov debacle US government trying it.

But I wonder if there’s a government anywhere with the literacy, savvy and bureaucratic agility to produce a strategic asset programming language like a FAANG would
Do the incentives even exist?
Maybe not today but I’d be shocked if it wasn’t tried SOME day in the next 20 years
