I was having a conversation with @j_mcsteen and @mattm1302 on the training floor yesterday about mental toughness. It’s one of those things you can’t quantify in this metric and data driven player development age.
It’s debatable on whether or not you can teach/ coach this. Some have various methods of the physical side (long distance running, hell weeks) which may not be ideal for everyone - especially in season.
However, I do think given the right environment you can foster it but it is inevitably up to the athlete at the end of the day.
How can we as coaches practically and safely work on this without risking injury and wasting training economy?
Simple, self imagery!
Simple, self imagery!
Make a mental picture of yourself and how you go through your routine. Recall your best performance you’ve ever had.
One at bat
One pitch
Striking a guy out
What does it feel like?
Sound like?

Here’s a quick video on this:
Don’t just imagine everything going right either! Put yourself in tough situations and imagine yourself working out of them!
