Thanks for raising the issue. I think that a key point is being aware of one's target audience/readership. Moreover, I don't translate in my mother tongue nor do I translate exclusively for native speakers of English who would be able to feel the pain of a cumbersome translation. Thus, I privilege clarity over beauty. 2/3 #translations
As for "literal translations", translating word by word is just NOT translating. Language works by means of sentences, not single words. 3/3
