Saying something is “evidence-based” for those of us who come from complex marginalized backgrounds is often basically the equivalent of saying “we decided this without your input and now insist that you submit to it.”
Oh hey we did science experiments without your perspective or people like you properly represented but now hey you have to listen to what we say and we don’t have to listen to you because SCIENCE.
We designed it based on our assumptions and concepts. We disproportionately excluded people with your background or failed to capture their own perspectives on their suffering but hush hush now: science
To be clear I’m speaking of mental health. Not suggesting everything is subjective in all of science. Yes my views of the chemical composition of water are immaterial but the question of what counts as suffering and healing for me are very much something I must be included in
And even within mental health some aspects may be purely objective, but definitely not the core questions. It is damaging if not inclusive and validating and empowering of lived experience.
Adding this here too since it belongs in this discussion and provides additional perspective. https://twitter.com/crys_tom/status/1324529996979822592
