According to @The_TUC 71% of women are being turned down for furlough. The government can and should do more. But so can HR. We have an obligation - right now.
Who is making the decision on furlough in your organisation? Do decisions have oversight from HR? Do managers have guidance to help? Do they know the law? Are you ensuring that there are appropriate reasons for turning people down? Are requests - and refusals - being monitored?
Working parents are under considerable pressure right now. If they are unable to do their job properly they have a legal right to request furlough. This should only be denied to them when there is a bloody good reason.
This isn't just about the short term but the long term. Do you want your employees to be burnt out? In the future, do you want to retain them, engage them? Then support them, now.
HR colleagues. What is going on at your place? Are your employees part of the 71%? Time for the profession to act.
One more thing. If you simply cannot say yes to furlough make sure managers explore other options to flex. Please.
