Ever heard of catastrophic thinking?

You might not realize it...but you probably do a bit of this every single day

It’s a cognitive distortion where you blow the bad things out of proportion

Cognitive distortions are faulty ways of thinking

Here's a thread 👇
Blowing things out of proportion can really mess with our mental health and cause a lot of the following 👇

> Self-doubt
> Anxiety
> Depression

It can also mess with relationships or your job

Basically you're reacting based on an assumption
What causes catastrophic thinking?

Vagueness 👉 When you don't have all the facts, your mind fills in the blank

Example: your boss wants to see you. Are you being fired?

Too much pressure on yourself

Example 👉 Everything needs to be perfect or you're a failure
Fear is another one

The fear of failing magnifies that fear which influences your emotions

Making you think the threat is more dangerous than it really is
What can you do to stop catastrophic thinking?

✅Keep track of what triggers these types of thoughts

✅Start to understand why they happen, and

✅Learn how to get into the habit of challenging them
How can you reframe catastrophic thinking?

👉 Realize it’s a worst-case scenario

That means there’s also a ✨best case✨scenario

Write in your journal about what the best case scenario can be

Focus your attention towards that one instead
How can you work through blowing negative assumptions out of proportion?

✨Start by labeling the negative thing

✨Imagine it actually happening

✨Work through how you would cope with it if it did happen
Let's say you start selling an ebook

But nobody buys it

Is it the end of the world?

Of course not!

What went wrong?

How can you make your next one better?
Failing once isn't a bit deal

But a lot of people quit after that first failure because they've turned it into a catastrophe using their distorted thoughts

Instead, do more research

Write another one

Market it better, or change the subject matter

There's always something
Work through the problem that you’re afraid of happening

That way you'll see that even if the worst thing does happen, you’ll find a way to work through it and learn from it

Do you have catastrophic thoughts?

How do you manage them?
