What I'm missing from this discussion: (thread)

❓How did Twitter & Facebook define and decide which tweets to remove and why?
❓Did Trump say anything explicitly illegal?
❓Did he share a link to prohibited content?
❓Was the police consulted?

If no, then we have a situation where tech companies decided they have the right to censor anyone for any reason.

Today, it's Trump, and as someone who disagrees with his views, decisions, actions and person completely, it doesn't sting as much.

These giant tech companies (Twitter, Facebook, Google etc.) are now vital infrastructure for public discussions in our societies.

Acting like they are still typical private companies and deciding what and who to censor or kick off their platforms is extremely problematic.

3 months ago the US was trying to throw Julian Assange,a journalist,in a cement coffin for life

Dems were screaming he
"interfered with an election" in 2016

Doesn't this Twitter/Facebook decision to censor a president also directly "interfere with an election"?

If Julian Assange has to "pay" for interfering with democracy, shouldn't Twitter/Facebook be held to the same standard?

Assange/WikiLeaks published (true and 100% verified info) abt corruption in a political party.
Twitter/Facebook arbitrarily decided to censor a candidate.

One could label anything stochastic terrorism.

It is, by definition, virtually impossible to show a direct link between acts of terrorism and scripted violence until after the violent act.

Terms like this leave a lot up to interpretation, which is problematic.

I am not suggesting that Trump should not be dealt with at all.

I'm pointing out that it should absolutely NOT be Twitter/Facebook's decision or place to do so.

It should be the police etc.
Social media platforms need to stay impartial and free of censorship.

The Paradox of Tolerance can be used as an argument for authoritarianism.

If we want a free and open society,we need to deal with nutcases and fascists in a way that doesn't bring authoritarianism.

Twitter deciding and enforcing censorship is not it.

Censorship and suppressing information is never, ever, ever a positive move for a democracy.

Especially not when enforced by private companies.

Why should we ever trust private companies with moderating #FreeSpeech?

Very important thread!

Like 9/11,this crisis will be used to implement even more surveillance laws and to normalize language like "domestic terrorism",
which we know will be used disproportionately against minority protesters in the future.
