Your body’s internal clock, also known as your circadian rhythm, works on light

The more light there is, the more awake you are

Night is when you should be most relaxed

But for many, this just isn’t the case

THREAD
The concept of a night owl is a symptom of a modernized world

Even in the darkness of night, your world is illuminated by light

Cellphones
TVs
Street lamps

All these confuse your brain into believing it’s day time

That’s bad news if you’re trying to fall asleep
When light hits your eyes, it release Dopamine in your brain

Dopamine stimulates you

Not something you want at bedtime
But, not all light is bad

Sunlight exposure increases serotonin production

That’s very important because serotonin becomes melatonin, your sleep hormone, in the evening

Which is why you feel very relaxed after spending a long day out in the sun
People call themselves night owls because their environment made them that way

Sure, some people do sleep later than others & there’s some genetics in there

But going to bed past midnight is a stress on your biology, no matter how you look at it
One of the simplest and cheapest ways to improve sleep is to keep your environment dark in the evening

Let your brain harmonize to the light dark cycles

Get off the computer early

Dim or turn off the lights in your house

You’ll notice yourself doze off much easier
