Want to grow your newsletter or email-list faster in 2021?

Here are 21 tips, channels and tactics that'll help you beat your subscriber goals for next year... 🧵
2/ Ask your audience what other newsletters they love, and run a cross-promotion with those newsletters.

For an example done right, see @TrevMcKendrick and @jspector's recent "takeover"...
3/ Facebook ads will make a comeback in 2021 after a bad 2020.

Especially for creators who rely on products, not sponsorship.

And ESPECIALLY if you target audiences based on referrers/referrals, like @morningbrew does.

4/ In 2021 you can't afford to "write once, post once."

Cross-post your newsletter content to relevant forums, subreddits and online communities, and reach 10x more people with 0.1x more work.
5/ Grow your newsletter by reducing "unnecessary" unsubscribes.

Most creators do "all or nothing" — you're either subscribed or unsubscribed.

In 2021, give your subscribers more control over how, when and what emails they want to receive from you.

Like @alexhillman does:
6/ Reach new people by repurposing your content.

Always write a weekly newsletter? How about turning it into a podcast? A Twitter thread? A short YouTube video?

See if you can make 2021 the year you spend MORE time promoting your content than you do creating it.
7/ Improve your subscriber conversion rates by adding social proof to your signup forms and landing pages.

EG with this FREE tool you can use to include your subscriber count — updated automatically — anywhere on your site: https://sparkloop.app/proof

Like @coreyhainesco does:
8/ Purposefully highlight more examples and mentions of other people your audience cares about in your newsletter content.

They are likely to share it with their own audience, increasing your reach for free.

(this is especially useful if you have < 10k subscribers)
9/ 2020 was the year of newsletter overload.

People are fed up of giving you their email address in the hope of value at some point in the next 30 days.

They want that value NOW. As soon as they subscribe.

... 2021 is the year of the lead magnet.
10/ 2020 was the year newsletter creators tried to copy @MorningBrew's referral program.

In 2021, they'll see how people like James Clear and Shane Parrish use @SparkLoopHQ, and make a referral program work for *their audience*.

Here's your head start: https://sparkloop.app/referral-university
11/ One thing you *do* want to copy from @MorningBrew in 2021 though is their referral giveaways!

We've seen newsletters of all shapes and sizes grow 2x faster by running a referral giveaway every 6-8 weeks.

Here's some inspiration for giveaway prizes: https://sparkloop.app/rewards-library?referral-tiers=giveaways
13/ Optimise your newsletter format for sharing.

Make it easy for your subscribers to share the best thoughts, links, and quotes from your newsletter with their friends.

And then prompt them to do so!

As with many things, James Clear is the gold standard...
14/ Experiment with creating more content and sending more emails.

Especially if you send less than 1 email/week!
15/ "Community" was one of 2020's buzziest buzzwords.

But they're an underrated (if slow-burning) growth tool for newsletters in 2021.

Especially if hosted on a platform that helps with discovery, like Facebook or Reddit.

Look to @jspector and @ReverseWineSnob for inspiration.
16/ Have you tried advertising your newsletter in another newsletter?

When I spoke to the growth team at Morning Brew in November, this was one of the growth channels they're most excited for in 2021.

Turns out, people who subscribe to newsletters like newsletters.

Who knew?
17/ The other newsletter growth channel Morning Brew are *really* bullish about for 2021?

... influencers.

Take a look at the names subscribed to your email-list (or check your top referrers in SparkLoop)...

recognise anyone you should be reaching out to?
18/ 2021 is the year of personalisation.

Stop showing every single website visitor the same signup form and message... no matter if they're already subscribed or what post they're reading!

Add a tool like @rightmessageapp and see conversion rates jump. https://rightmessage.com/articles/rightmessage-and-sparkloop/
19/ Have a smaller audience, or cater to a specific industry?

Don't sleep on an ambassador program.

Here's how to get started: https://twitter.com/louisnicholls_/status/1339209490265235456?s=20
20/ In 2021, personality matters.

Put yourself (or your team) front and centre to reach new audiences, by appearing on podcasts and guest-blogging.
21/ Let's finish with a tactic I think has flown *completely* under the radar and is due for a *big* uptick in 2021...

... acquiring other newsletters!

Whether you acquire and merge, or just let it run... most newsletters are *seriously* underpriced right now.

How much longer?
