One of our competitors has been getting roasted on social media the last 24 hours.

I gain more by not saying anything, but as someone who ironically would get social media jabbed by their former CEO I think there’s a good lesson here.

👇
For one, it’s kind of awkward because their new CEO is a friend. He’s the only external person who’s been to @profitwell holiday parties.

When he joined Xenon he didn’t even know he’d helm Baremetrics and we had a good convo with some laughs when it happened.
As part of Xenon’s strategy they made some not great UX changes that are easy to complain about, but have some nuance.

I’m not going to share specifics because I think it distracts from the point I’m trying to make, but these types of issues are powder kegs on social media.
When someone texted me the thread, my heart sank because I knew Brian was having a terrible day.

It’s not because these issues shouldn’t be debated and maybe mocked a little. It’s because instead of having a discussion with nuance, it turns into a dunk contest.
I don’t know where the balance is, but if you hunt the thread down, I feel like @adii and @arvidkahl were great examples of pushing the community forward.

Even if we compete, we’re a community and the beauty of community is we can make each other better.
We don’t make each other better with personal attacks or viewing through a self righteous lens (and to be fair the original poster and most people didn’t).

We make each other better by shedding dogma and arguing from first principles, even when publicly calling something out.
obviously you’ll do what you want, but communities are advanced through the dialectic and debate, not dunks.

Lastly - Brian’s a human. I get the frustration with what they did and their reaction doubled down on that frustration.

But...
Building a company is hard. We’re going to make mistakes.

Point them out. Disagree. Just know there’s a human there who may see the world differently or just doesn’t know.

I know this comes off preachy, but just sharing context since I’ve been in Brian’s shoes.
I always wish and hope friends will jump in, but the mob makes that hard. Just wanted to do the thing I always wish happened to me for Brian.

Appreciate you homie.

Anyways.
