Managing Archaeology in Dynamic Urban Centres. A thread to introduce our new book about #urban #archaeology in #Europe and beyond. Edited by @paulbelford and @jeroenbouw_mr, and published by @sidestonepress. 1/20
The book was launched last week at @RCE_erfgoed, who generously funded the publication costs. Presentations by @SHglin and @FCriadoBoado reflect the project’s origins in @archaeologyEAA meetings. 2/20
Don’t worry if you missed the launch - you can go back and see the whole thing here: https://channel.royalcast.com/cultureelerfgoed/#!/cultureelerfgoed/20201217_1 Or for a shorter introduction just keep reading! 3/20
We began discussing #urban #archaeology at @archaeologyEAA more than 10 years ago, but it was at #EAA2017 in #Maastricht when ideas crystallised. We found much in common across #Europe, and beyond. 4/20
So – with support of @SHglin and @FCriadoBoado – we set up the ‘Urban #Archaeology @archaeologyEAA Community’ to take discussion forward. This was formally established by @paulbelford and @jeroenbouw_mr at #EAA2018 in #Barcelona. 5/20
We brought together papers from #Maastricht and #Barcelona @archaeologyEAA sessions into this book. Papers are ordered geographically roughly north to south, after introduction to themes and issues by @paulbelford and @jeroenbouw_mr. 6/20
First Edita Povilaityté-Leliugiené discusses complex interactions between nature, #archaeology and built #heritage in the symbolically-charged castle complex at Gediminas Hill in #Vilnius, #Lithuania. 7/20
Then we move to the periphery of Europe, where @paulbelford critiques aspects of the development-driven ‘polluter pays’ #archaeology system in the #UK, including inconsistent approaches and resourcing - and a tendency to create silos. 8/20
Next stop is #Belgium, where Femke Martens and colleagues describe the complexities surrounding the redevelopment of the Kipdorp site in #Antwerp, part of the Noorderlijn project - one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects. 9/20
Then north to the #Netherlands. Maarten Groenendijk discusses challenges of ‘building-friendly #archaeology’ in #Gouda – how well does #preservation in situ work in practice? Even when things go wrong, we should ‘just do it’! 10/20
Then Jan-Willem Oudhof describes the ‘pressure cooker’ created by #urban renewal in #Utrecht – an ambitious redevelopment reuniting a city divided in the 1970s, at the centre of which is the 16th century fortress Vredenburg. 11/20
The final paper from the #Netherlands is a discussion of methods for predicting the locations of disturbances and sites in #urban places – in which @jeroenbouw_mr uses the example of his own house in #Deventer! 12/20
Next to #Germany, where Thomas Höltken and Marcus Trier explore some of very exciting developments in #urban #archaeology frameworks and approaches that resulted from the construction of the #Cologne North-South Urban light railway. 13/20
In contrast the situation in #Luxembourg is made more challenging by political and legal issues. Christiane Bis-Worch explores the dialogue and debate which continues throughout #archaeology projects there. 14/20
Marion Liboutet describes the challenges in recording and protecting #archaeology in Canton Vaud, #Switzerland. The main legislation dates from 1969, and intense #urban development is difficult to manage whilst protecting heritage. 15/20
In the first of two papers from #Italy, Claudia de Davide considers how an understanding of #stratigraphy can be used to predict the impact of future developments on archaeological remains, using the case study of #Aosta. 16/20
Another approach from #Italy is presented by Valeria Boi. The Esquiline Hill in #Rome was radically landscaped in the 1800s. #GIS has been used to create sophisticated deposit models with information from a wide range of sources. 17/20
Finally Jon Seligman highlights some of the issues facing the practice of #urban archaeology in #Israel. Rooting #archaeology in planning ensures community engagement and preservation for future generations. 18/20
Big thanks to colleagues at @archaeologyEAA, @RCE_erfgoed and @sidestonepress. Archaeology without borders! We look forward to welcoming you to the #urban #archaeology session at #EAA2021 in Kiel – and the start of the next book? 19/20
