Black pepper has one of the most interesting pharmacologies of any common kitchen spice

It activates the cannabinoid system, mildly inhibits the breakdown of serotonin, and acts as a Pgp inhibitor, synergistically increasing the penetration of other herbal compounds into the CNS
Tumeric has a wide range of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity

It's primary active compound has mild analgesic effects, actives monoamine neurotransmitters, and prevents the inhibition of neurogenesis by glutamate by activating the TrkB receptor
Ginger decreases a range of inflammatory markers, acts as a digestive tonic, increases testosterone by almost 20% along with other fertility markers in men

It also seems to prevent lipid oxidation, has even been shown to improve cognition in some studies
Besides tasting amazing, cinnamon is another good digestive, and shares the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of other spices

It also helps reduce the glycemic impact of carbs, and has been shown in some studies to potentiate the effects of and sensitivity to insulin
Black seed, or black cumin, is one of my all time favorite herbs

The main active compound thymoquine relieves excess glutamate, promotes endorphin activation, lowers inflammation, and stimulates mitochondrial function through the AMPK and sirtuin pathways
Cardamom shares many of the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive, and blood sugar balancing effects of other herbs/spices

Nutmeg also possesses these benefits in research, and a few animal studies have shown that it may reduce depression and improve cognitive function too
Myrrh is another excellent digestive, with antibacterial activity against many pathogens within the microbiome

It also reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and has been shown in some studies to possess analgesic effects
