There is SO MUCH new science & high-quality journalism getting published about #COVID19 right now.
Here's a thread on some of the pieces that caught my eye this week, and why they matter:
Here's a thread on some of the pieces that caught my eye this week, and why they matter:
1) How to get people vaccinated: A thoughtful viewpoint from @abuttenheim @kevin_volpp & Loewenstein: "the potential for these vaccines to help halt the pandemic will be limited without comparable attention paid to traversing the behavioral âlast mileâ" https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2774381?guestAccessKey=c2b126fa-9bdd-404b-a2bc-7a043e403ce8&utm_source=silverchair&utm_campaign=jama_network&utm_content=covid_weekly_highlights&cmp=1&utm_medium=email
2) #COVID19 is top 3 causes of death for all Americans.
(For those younger than 45, injuries - like #gunviolence, #suicide, & #opioid overdose - remain more common. More to come later in this thread.) https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2774465?guestAccessKey=02fbe322-4f79-4ff0-be26-dd7b04ad3e8b&utm_source=silverchair&utm_campaign=jama_network&utm_content=covid_weekly_highlights&cmp=1&utm_medium=email

3) But on the other hand, per @jeremyfaust @hmkyale @RWalensky's great piece, #COVID19 still hurts young people: 40% of excess mortality this spring/summer in US adults age 25-44 was due to #COVID19 ... https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2774445?resultClick=1
4) With most of the rest likely due to increased #opioid overdoses.
(This is why I talk a lot about the knock-on effects of the pandemic. The increase in ODs did NOT mirror patterns of shutdowns - as per a bunch of older articles)

5) Isolation is part of this. But #COVID19 itself may be causing #mentalhealth problems. A new piece in @TheLancet says that 18% of people develop a brand new #mentalhealth diagnosis after COVID - 2x as many as after other illnesses like flu
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(20)30462-4/fulltext

6) Of course, #COVID19 is **not** just the flu. New paper in @bmj_latest shows that SARS-CoV-2 has 5x the mortality of flu - as well as greatly increased rates of kidney failure, sepsis, and more - among hospitalized patients. https://www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m4677
7) Finally, to get out of this, we have to build back trust in science. Unfortunately, political affiliation predicts safety behaviors among this study of youth in LA County. (Maybe this is part of the reason for the increased infexn rates there?) https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2774123?guestAccessKey=8ee2b831-3e08-43e7-b521-9cfb0b1848aa&utm_source=silverchair&utm_campaign=jama_network&utm_content=ped_weekly_highlights&cmp=1&utm_medium=email
8) But there's hope: personal narratives from #healthcare professionals change hearts, minds, and may change behavior: neat study by @kekocher @RachelSolnickMD et al. cc @darakass :) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/acem.14188
9) And oh yes. If you haven't already, do check out the FDA data from Moderna and Pfizer :)
