I'm a bit puzzled that some still deny the concept of 'herd immunity' despite the incoming vaccines. Please let me state this one more time, there's nothing political about herd immunity, it's not a strategy nor a policy, it's just a fact of life.

The claims that herd immunity has never been achieved by natural infection strikes me as bizarre. Herd immunity through infection is how we historically kept in check ~200 respiratory viruses, including seasonal - previously pandemic - flu lineages.

Achieving herd immunity comes at a massive cost in terms of morbidity/mortality, and vaccines are wonderful tools to increase the proportion of the population being immunised at essentially no risk, ensuring epidemic respiratory viruses become endemic.

At the risk of coming across as a bit blunt, let me clarify that "we never acquired herd immunity for any respiratory virus through vaccination alone". Some countries may achieve it for #COVID19, but this will be challenging in the absence of fraction of natural infections.
