A #buildinpublic thread! How to use #reddit to get customers :)

The following is my experience running a few #marketing experiments for http://Joyful.gifts  on Reddit for 1 month.
In that month, 1481 news users visited the site via the platform, representing about 20%
1/n
of our total traffic. I don’t have the analytics infrastructure to attribute customers yet. My guess it led to 1-3 new customers. Meager? Perhaps, but I am quite happy given that these results are with 0$ in ad spend and with a brand new product.
Reddit is a sleeper when
2/n
it comes to organic reach and sometimes ignored for more glamorous channels.

It’s a powerful marketing channel with 52 million daily users. Also, it’s slightly ahead of Twitter by early adopters segmentation – so, really good for new products.
3/n
From the very beginning, this was about extracting as much value in exposure & revenue with no marketing budget. My goal was to explore product-market fit and what works and what doesn’t. Basically, the art of #indiehackers
Here is what I did to drive that traffic. 4/n
1. Search.
There are 2 ways you can find posts that are relevant to your product on reddit. Wonder aimlessly hoping to see one, or use the search function.

Also, here is a tip. Spend your time figuring what are the best keywords to search for. 5/n
No one writes a post asking for a "no code website builder", but complaints about Wordpress or WIX are plenty.

Lastly, do yourself a favor. Sort by new posts. You don't want to spend your time responding to six months old posts that the Reddit algorithm thinks is relevant. 6/n
2. Don't spam. Add value.

Every person who visits a subreddit is there for a reason. They are looking to be entertained, to learn something new, ask a question, or vent.
Approaching Reddit as a street vendor hawking his merchandise would go nowhere. 7/n
Instead, ask yourself how can I add value to this discussion? And if possible, plug in my product if it truly solves a problem.
Here is an example, someone was venting on a popular pub subreddit on how long it takes to do Christmas shopping. Perfect plug opportunity for me! 8/n
3. Optimize for Engagement.
A big mistake when marketing on reddit is to go 4 the really big subs. These subreddits have a bigger audience, but typically the engagement is low from the constant noise.
The best way to use Reddit is to drive traffic to your website. 9/n
Seeing your post is okay, but clicking on the link is the goal. For that, optimize for small subreddits where your customers are more likely to engage with you.

4. Stories.
Anchor your product in an inspiring story, and use that story as a constant driver for traffic.

10/n
For example, I built http://Joyful.gifts  after teaching myself how to do code in under 6 months. Outside of my product, that story and journey are valuable.

Stories allow you to talk about what you built w/o being another salesman trying to sell your audience something.
11/n
Be genuine too. The truth is, if you want to build a lasting product, you have to be honest and trustworthy.

For the record, the best performing Reddit post about http://Joyful.gifts  was in a r/pharmacy where I told the story of learning to code as a pharmacist. 12/n
It got us a few customers, and it was on a small subreddit and completely anchored on the story.

5. Last thing. Don't always sell.
I will be honest with you. Running a small online business is hard. Waaay harder than anything you can imagine, but rewarding in its own way! 13/n
You are out-gunned, out-manned, out-numbered, and out-planned all the time.
In a way, it's counterintuitive to tell you not to sell all the time. But it really works. Recommend other makers naturally, and they will recommend you.
Be helpful and kind to strangers. 14/n
The social structure of Reddit encourages that behavior with upvotes and karma, so use it to your advantage. Kindness is a superpower, and it will make the process much more enjoyable with tangible results. So be kind!
