Interesting that some public health people are calling for stronger guidance over social mixing at Christmas rather than making the law stricter.

Can we extend this principle & change all household mixing rules to guidance rather than law?

For nearly 2 months it has been a criminal offence in most of the country to invite even one person into your home.

Some are observing the law strictly, others are using common sense to interpret it *flexibly*. Unsurprisingly many young people are simply ignoring the law.

The situation is exacerbated by the law which makes it a criminal offence to meet even one person in restaurants, cafes & pubs. As pubs etc have a legal duty to try to enforce, this drives even more (illegal) social mixing in homes.

The social mixing laws have not been able to prevent recent rises in Covid-19 in areas such as London, Kent & Essex. Back in October, areas without the law in place such as Nottingham still saw big decreases in positive tests.

The social mixing rules are ineffective and have encouraged widespread disrespect of the law. In turn, this has put police in an impossible position.

Is it time to replace these laws with guidance & advice, tailored to local conditions & infection rates?
