If your tips about how to “cultivate resilience” are all about how people should manage the “ups & downs” and don’t acknowledge how some people deal with really serious trauma and loss that can’t just be cast off with a “winning mindset” keep that shit away from me. Yuck.
I mean seriously why does so mainstream mental health advice have to be so dripping with privilege and gaslighting?
Often written by a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist for a MH site. Inexcusable. If you’re writing something for a general audience, then you’re going to have to grapple with diversity. Or just say “How to Be Resilient If You’re Starting from A Place of Privilege”
It’s icky to write an article w a singular voice as if it’s appropriate for everyone without acknowledging that trauma & serious adversity are real. Wanna see some stats? When you don’t acknowledge this, it says some icky things about who you envision a relevant audience to be
And I don’t care if the advice helps most people (I actually doubt it does). At the very least it should have a caveat that it is horribly unsuitable for people dealing with serious trauma etc. Otherwise, it’s irresponsible.
