Now that collecting HRV data during the night is simpler (a few devices can do it), some questions come up. What data should you use? Whole night? Deep sleep (SWS) only?
When deciding, keep in mind that HRV is measured, while deep sleep is estimated (rather poorly I might add)

if you rely on the device's best guess on what was the last 5 minutes SWS segment, you might as well use a random data point
I highly recommend using the entire night or 5 hours post-midnight as done in most studies (and by Oura or Firsbeat) for a more meaningful assessment

it seems to me an obvious step back to take something you can measure (HRV) and confound it with something you can barely estimate (deep sleep, and even more so "the last segment" of it). Just use the entire night and all the data you have measured, this is not helping anyone
For the same reasons, when using an Apple Watch we recommend actively taking a morning measurement using the Breathe app, instead of relying on data points collected quite randomly (and automatically) by the watch, see also: https://medium.com/@altini_marco/the-ultimate-guide-to-heart-rate-variability-hrv-part-1-70a0a392fff4
