So an incident happened today that's still playing on my mind.

My niece (Y9) told me that she's been reading 'Of Mice and Men' at school. Yesterday the teacher said the 'N' word out loud as she was reading a section of the book (teacher is White).

She said the class (consisting mostly of African & African Caribbean students) were "fuming" (her words). She said she questioned the teacher about why she said the word and the teacher said it was in the book and "wasn't a big deal" (niece sharing the words of the teacher).

That afternoon the students in the class wrote a letter to the Headteacher asking why a teacher who is White is about to say the word.

Today my niece went to school and her English class was told by the deputy head that they would no longer be taught by that teacher.

When the students asked why they had a different teacher the Deputy head told the class that the teacher felt "threatened" & "disrespected" by "their behaviour" and it was decided that another teacher would now take the class.

What I don't understand is...

1. Why the issue wasn't addressed
2. Why a majority Black class that is questioning the use of a racially derogatory term is considered "threatening"
3. Why the schools response was to simply move the teacher to a different class.
My niece said her class still want to understand why but they don't know who at the school they can speak to.
