what's weird is that it's taken this long for utilities, who sell electricity and have seen demand be mostly flat for a decade or more, to finally look at transportation, one of the only sectors that doesn't use electricity, and say, golly gee maybe there's an opportunity here https://twitter.com/yayitsrob/status/1328750489832464384
it's like they've lobbied for like unlimited coal ash ponds and weaker mercury pollution controls with gusto but the one thing that could help them maybe a kajillion dollars it's like "eh maybe next year"
*make a kajillion dollars. Anyway- here's my grand bargain: a giant EV clean mobility stimulus program but it comes with a national clean electricity portfolio standard and ties the amount of the EV credit to the carbon intensity of the regional grid or ISO.
In the United States, less than 1% of petroleum use goes toward making electricity (HI & PR are exceptions) & less than 1% of transport energy is powered by electricity (91% of transport is powered by oil). Clean up the grid, electrify transport, reduce VMT, & I'll bring snacks
