One of the hardest concepts to explain to people who don't translate entertainment is that there is no perfect 1:1 translation for every single word/phrase that is consistently the same. It's easier to explain this concept with English words, so let's look at the word "big."

When hearing the word "big" just isolated on its own, what does your brain visualize? Maybe a big building? That's one of the main meanings of the word "big," vast in size. Like a big building (a mansion) or a big breakfast (full English) or a big continent (Africa.)

But what about "big" in these contexts:
Big sister: (older sister)
Big deal: (significant matter)
We're gonna make it big: (We're going to be successful)
He was big in the 80's: (He was famous in the 80's)

If, as an E>J translator, I used the dictionary definition of "big" ("ookii") in all of these examples, my translations would be bonkers since "Ookii" usually leans towards bigness of size rather than importance, significance, success, or age.

It's the same with all words and all phrases. It's why you might hear "souka" in an anime and see it subbed as, "I see" by one translator, "I'm sorry," but another, "really?" by another, "Okay" by another, "that's interesting," by another, and "Oh..." by another.

So unless you understand Japanese (&, preferably, actually have experience translating it) there really is no use comparing a pro-TL to a fan-TL and immediately discrediting the pro-TL because it translated "hai" as "sorry?" and you KNOW that "hai" always means "yes." It doesn't.

That's not to say pro-translators are perfect and never make mistakes - we do. we're human and often overworked and underpaid and given limited context for the things we translate - just saying translation is a lot more complicated than normies think.

Anyway, it's hilarious, insulting, and frustrating when some fans with int-level Japanese try to "correct" our work. The majority of fans are great and we love them! I think of the fans when I work and I enjoy hearing from them. Sometimes the noisy minority gets me down, tho tbh.
