Green Tea Thread

Green tea is one of my favourite beverages and teas. It has a multitude of health properties, and it makes me feel amazing. It is my superfood go to for enhanced alertness, cognition, and energy.
It is also incredibly versatile in flavours. It is meant to be consumed plain, otherwise added milk interferes with the health properties of the catechins and tannins (types of polyphenols).
Green tea is known for containing EGCG, a powerful catechin and antioxidant, responsible for many of the health properties.100x more powerful than Vitamin C. There are compounds in green tea that all contribute to the health benefits. Green tea has more catechins than black tea.
- Reduce ROS
- Increases metabolism through oxidation of fat cells, including during exercise
- Reduce appetite by reducing ghrelin (research shows this and many people experience it, but it actually makes me hungry, and I think this is due to the increase in fat burning)
- Improved mood, reduction of anxiety through increase in dopamine and alpha brain waves (associated with alert relaxation)
- Neuroprotective – can reduce risk of neurodegeneration
- Reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth that contribute to halitosis, gingivitis, and dental caries, reduces periodontal bone resorption
- Reduces risk of UTIs (reduces harmful bacteria in urinary tract)
- Anti-viral
- Reduces all-cause mortality
Quality is paramount. The higher the quality, the more beneficial compounds will be present, and the less fluoride it will contain. All teas absorb fluoride from the soil, and cheaper teas contain more.
To get most of the benefits, drink it away from meals as food decreases absorption of the catechins.
