Struggling with consistency? You've got to be able to go back to your routines as an anchor. Study any truly elite MLB pitcher & they all have incredibly detailed routines. Kluber. Kershaw. Scherzer. DeGrom. We can learn a lot from how they prepare.
One of the biggest things that helped me in college was practicing routines every single day. My mechanics were all over the place at times, but by having these routines as an anchor, I could still be competitive with them & reasonably in the zone. Some of what that entails:
1) Pre-game routine: When do you begin preparing? When do you turn off your phone? When do you begin throwing as a starter? When do you head to the bullpen as a reliever? What's your warm-up routine? Zero in on these answers over time until it becomes second nature.
2) In-between inning routine: Where do you sit in the dugout? How do you clear your mind to prepare for the next inning? What do you do if the half inning runs long to stay warm? What is your sequence of pre-inning warm-up pitches?
3) Pre-pitch routine: This may be the most important of them all. How do you receive the ball? How do you take the sign? When do you BREATHE? How do you clear your head before/after each pitch? What is your reset when đź’© hits the fan and you find the game speeding up on you?
Something as simple as 5-10 minutes a day in practice simulating an inning or two (15-30 reps) can go a long way. Visualize the count. The batter. The game situation. Receive the ball from the catcher, toe the rubber. Breathe. Then deliver the pitch (light to moderate dry reps).
