1/ A TOOL TO END THE PANDEMIC

Everyone wants to get out of this pandemic

So what if we told you there was a way to do it, saving lives and livelihoods, but the FDA isn’t allowing it to happen

✅Cheap
✅Fast
✅Easy

We’re talking about daily quick tests

#dailyquicktest
2/
They’re cheap…about $1 a piece

They’re fast…with results the same day

And they’re simple…with the ability to perform at home with saliva or nose swabs with no professional help
3/ Think of it like a home pregnancy test

And even though current testing methods take way too long, the FDA won’t approve these new daily quick tests

Why?
4/ They rely on an outdated way of thinking about testing

It has to be perfect and lab based, regardless of how slow it is

They say these daily quick tests are less accurate

But that thinking is, well, inaccurate
5/ Current tests capture disease a little bit earlier, but only a few hours before a daily quick test
6/ And the thing is, daily quick tests actually detect disease at its peak, when someone is most infectious

Which is exactly when detection matters most
7/ And, because it’s cheap and fast, we avoid the delay issue

In other words, even if it’s less accurate, it doesn’t matter from a disease control standpoint
8/ Let’s look at it like this, if you were sick but it gave you a negative result, you could simply take another daily quick test the next day, and likely detect the disease

That means your worst case scenario is a 1-day delay in detection
9/ Meanwhile, with current testing methods you’d be facing a 7-day delay for results anyway

If we start taking daily quick tests everyday, we can quickly identify those who are most infectious, and slow the spread of this virus
10/ And they could be particularly effective in a hotspot, where dropping a few million of these tests tests could play a significant t role in bringing the situation under control
11/ The bottom line is, the FDA won’t approve because they’re thinking of it like a diagnostic test, not as a tool to end the pandemic
12/ The technology exists. It’s as simple as printing paper and cutting it millions of little strips
13/ And with FDA approval, they could be in our hands, and mouths and noses, by September

Motivated by the work of @michaelmina_lab

Special thanks to @rwalensky for input

**Now that you know, what can you do?**
16/ We joined forces with @Chris_Said, who got together with @michaelmina_lab @rwalensky @danlarremore to create http://www.rapidtests.org

Their site has information on what you can do, including template letters to elected officials

( http://www.dailyquicktest.com  points there too)
19/ I also want to thank @rochellewalensky (I have gotten to know her because we serve together with @michaelmina_lab and others on a reopening committee.

She gave important feedback on this video, and has been on TV as a vocal proponent of these tests https://twitter.com/RWalensky/status/1292258556226539521?s=20
21/ I also couldn’t sit on the sidelines once I knew this.

This video is the latest effort, but I also wrote about these tests in my piece in @PostOpinions a few weeks ago on ‘6 positive developments’

“Rapid, low-cost saliva tests are also coming..." https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/07/14/need-some-good-news-about-covid-19-here-are-six-reasons-optimism/
23/ @RanuDhillon and @abraarkaran teamed up for this piece in @HBR on smarter lockdowns, where they call for these daily quick tests:

“We need to consider bolder strategies...such as universal daily screening with rapid paper-strip tests.” https://hbr.org/2020/08/the-u-s-needs-smarter-lockdowns-now
24/ Why is an expert in #HealthyBuildings weighing in on testing and creating a video?

First and foremost, I’m a public health professor

I felt a duty to amplify this message.
25/ And, FWIW, my goal is to come out of the pandemic with $0 in my research and teaching account.

If that means spending money on PR and video production, I'm good with that

It's an "All-In" moment if there ever was one
