My main gripe with #weightloss discourse is that we overlook the psychological reasons why someone is over-eating and just tell them to do a diet and exercise more. There's no acknowledgement that someone who struggles with self-esteem may also struggle to make healthy choices.
I never thought to introspect and look at what it was that was driving me to binge or eat poorly; I just assumed I was inherently lazy and lacking in self-control and when I failed to lose weight. The idea that it might be linked to my emotional state was never put forward.
Only when I started going to a therapist for something I thought was completely unrelated to weight was I able to really understand my choices and make progress in becoming healthier. But it's harder to make money off people who have a good grasp on their mental health, isn't it?
