People keep asking whether opening schools is safe.

Also need to be asking whether shutting schools is safe. It’s not.

Here are some illustrations.
“In Los Angeles, for example, nearly 80% of the students attending the district’s public schools qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. Hundreds of thousands of students and their families rely on those meals as a key part of their daily nutrition.”
Shutting schools is injurious to the cognitive and emotional development of children.
We have seen a dramatic uptick in depression and other mental illness among children.

In April, there was a 1000% increase in pediatric calls to the DHHS’s “Disaster Distress Helpline”.
It is not just calls for help. We have seen evidence of increased suicide rates among children, espcially among the most vulnerable.
Schools also play a vital role in welfare checks. Kids are falling through the cracks that we are doing nothing but widening.

One study estimated that 200k of child abuse went unreported in March & April do to shut schools.
This is not just anecdotal. Systematic reviews echo the same basic point.

Schools are essential.

Kind of like how you sufficiently “need” internet & so you are cool with my cousin making house calls to fix your cable box—kids need school.
The judgment of history is coming.
