I’ve been asked for an explanation of the English hospital death table & graphs. Hope this thread does the trick.

We want to see what is happening to deaths over time but the problem is they can be reported some days or even weeks after they happen. https://twitter.com/cricketwyvern/status/1273244404942344193
As of today, 43 deaths have been reported as occurring on 12th June compared to 45 on the 11th. However, more deaths may still be reported later for one or both dates, so we don’t know yet which had the higher number of deaths.
The 5-day reporting total tells us how many deaths were reported for a date after 5 days of reporting, e.g. for the 12th June as of today & the number for that date is 43. As of yesterday, the 11th had 5 days of reporting & also had 43 deaths.
You can go up diagonally along the grey cells to see the equivalent numbers day by day.

Similar principle for the 4-, 3- and 2-day reporting totals – just follow the diagonal cells of the same colour. These are the numbers plotted on the various graphs.
Most deaths have been reported after 5 days, so the 5-day trend gives us a pretty good idea of whether deaths are actually falling or not.
The 4-, 3- & 2-day trends are a bit more volatile, but can give us an early warning of any significant changes coming up.

E.g. it was obvious yesterday from the 2-day reporting total that we were seeing a bit of a spike on the 14th June.
