This week on translating #araoto -- a very special porn DVD -- whoops, I mean Blu-ray.
Translation is about determining what's important, and the title of Izumi's porno is important.
1: Kazusa looks at it to realize that it's not a train, it's a bus. The word "bus" is important.
2: Kazusa makes Izumi say a tongue twister which, in Japanese, uses the word "bus", an obvious tie-in to the porno contents. ("basu gasu bakuhatsu -- literally 'bus gas explosion')
Point 2 complicates things further -- there aren't any tried and tested English tongue twisters that are based around a bus in the same way. What to do?
The tongue twister was also the episode title, which I had to translate the episode prior for the Next Episode Preview. Luckily, I was able to read ahead and see what was important about it (the bus/transportation link).
From there, research on English tongue twisters -- and finally, I found one that had elements that I could connect. "Willy's real rear wheel" satisfied the transportation link (Wheel, Bus) and had the added bonus of including the word "willy". Score.
Because I was working with Izumi repeating "wheel" and not "bus", the word "wheel" had to be front and center on the porn title for the connection to work. What phrases do I know have the word "wheel" and "bus" in them?
Add in a few elements from the literal translation (for reference: "I'll make you cum all the way to the last stop on the commuter bus") -- I took "cum" and "commuter bus". Make the title sound more like an English-language porno and we're golden!
