The #Connemara Public Library in Madras was established in 1890 by the then Governor Lord Connemara. I have lived in Madras for 25 years but never got a chance to see the old and original building because it is not open for public. Last 3 days they opened it for #WorldBookDay 1/n
/n Since many living in Chennai don’t get a chance to see the old building and the rare books on display, I am sharing some pics and videos. Mind blowing stained glass wonder land! #Connemara #WorldBookDay
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay I loved these 100+ year old books kept on display at the Connemara Public library. Happy to see so many people taking such a keen interest in books
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay Such rare books are on display. If you are in Chennai and can spare two hours please do visit. Totally worth it! I have never seen such a stunning library in India before. Reminds me of the old ones in Europe.
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay I could look at the books and furniture and ceiling patterns all day and night! What a beautiful library we have in Chennai but it’s a pity they open the doors to this old building only three days a year.
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay Here is the perhaps the first ever printed book in India - printed in Tamil - a book called Doctrina Christam, (Thambiraan Vanakkam) published in 1578
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay The red is the old library building and the blue bridge is the one connecting it to the new library building. Btw, there are good washrooms in this complex...in case you need it when you’re in Pantheon road area
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay A video of the pathway lined up with books on ancient wooden racks on both sides and leading to the hall with a massive ceiling and racks and racks of books on mezzanine as well.
/n #Connemara #WorldBookDay I was so fascinated with this wooden turnstile!
/n The Egmore museum complex has an area that has 2000+ fruit eating
bats that most live on the Tamarind tree. There is also a Baobab tree! So fascinating! I was lucky to see the kingfisher sitting on that info plate

/n These British era statues seem to have been removed from streets of Madras and moved to the museum compound. Amazingly sculpted
/n #connemara Can you see and hear the fruit eating bats? Can’t imagine this in the middle of CHENNAI city!
/n Finally but importantly, I loved the inclusive signboards in the museum complex (only paintings sans letters) and the good washrooms #Connemara
Can’t get over this ceiling and stained glass windows and wooden panels at #Connemara
