Seeing how great this thread https://twitter.com/Mochievous/status/983307244598067200 did and the many questions I get on options for Drs not interested in clinical work, I present some non-clinical job options for Doctors. P.S many options from @Mochievous's thread also apply.
1. Start with the obvious one, Public health. This doesn't involve clinical work as the population is your 'patient'. Route in can be through an MPH but traditional route for Drs is via a proper Public health medicine faculty like. http://www.fph.org.uk/
2. Health Management. This can be a track under public health but is a discipline in its own right. To get in, an MBA or MHA is desirable. Dedicated professional colleges for it like https://www.achsm.org.au/ now exist.
3. Health Technology. A field that's fast growing with more interest and many tracks. You could start out as a clinical advisor for a startup, startup yourself or do a focused health informatics masters. Many doctors have gone on to be coders and switch to tech totally.
4. Health insurance. HMOs always on the lookout for doctors to review claims and liaise with health professionals among other responsibilities. No particular extra qualifications needed initially but masters/ courses in the area help over time.
5. Practice management consultancy. Build out some expertise in managing health practices can lead you to commence your own consultancy helping practices be more efficient. Experience and MBA usually needed.
6. Health economics. Do this if you've interest in influencing govt policy directions or working with NGOs to improve health financing and related issues. Prof Lambo was a famous one who became Nigerian health minister. Postgrad degree needed.
7. Management consulting. Most firms have healthcare focused practices that can be better served by people with medical training. MBA or similar usually needed to make the transition easier. Also possible to go direct as a graduate trainee with right network/ experience.
8. Investment banking/ financial planner/ Venture capital. Many have made the switch from medicine to careers in the financial world. @knightofdelta and @YeleBademosi are examples. MBA and networks very useful.
9. Content producer/ writer. Some people have made careers out of producing medical content as a service either for CME or other pharma related publications. Worth exploring perhaps as a side hustle to begin with.
10. Pharma physician. Pharma companies often need doctors involved in various steps of the drug discovery, testing, licensing and marketing process. Most companies have dedicated trainee programs for it. Scour their websites and apply. Also network widely.
This is only a small number of many career opportunities available. You're a smart, dedicated acheiver. You can do whatever you put your mind to. Not every time jaundice and hepatomegaly. Additions? @Healthertainer @dr_dedun @drfemikuti @waledash
