I always wondered about the meaning behind ‘Whalien 52’ and I just found out and it’s honestly making me tear up...
Hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen...
In 1989, scientists discovered a whale which sang at a frequency of 52 Hz (most whales sing at a frequency of between 10 and 40 Hz) meaning it’s calls possibly couldn’t be heard by other whales. Despite this it kept on singing, travelling thousands of miles across the ocean...
Over the years it continued to sing but no other whale was ever recorded singing at this frequency. It was often described as ‘the loneliest whale in the world’...
BTS chose to sing about this whale as ‘a metaphor for the alienation from others often felt by adolescents’ and how young people often feel they don’t have a voice against older generations...
‘In the middle of this ocean, one lonely whale cries. No matter how much it shouts, no one can hear it. So lonely, it just stays quiet’...
When BTS first formed, they were constantly put down, wondering if they would ever debut, enduring hardships, blood, sweat and tears, just to make their voices heard in the music industry. To be respected as artists despite being under a relatively small record label...
But look at them now...
BTS have shown us that giving up is not an option...sometimes we can feel alienated in this vast world, the important thing is that you keep on singing your song, making your voice heard...eventually someone will hear you 🐋💜
