Most families become complacent within one generation. There are multiple causes for this: 1) the children are now on a safe path, and doing the safest things is the best.
2) the parents don't transmit any meaningful culture. The kid needs to learn how to get respect and self-respect before they are 12. If they're not hooked on doing something they're good at before then, they'll never know how to feel good.
3) A lot of parents simply say kids will figure it out. But if you don't train the reward cycles soon enough, or just leave it to the state/schools, then the kids will have nothing that anchors them. It's random. A very few will find their own way, but most will be lost..
Either looking for reward in purely hedonic chaos, or going for whatever is safest so they don't lose the easy path they were handed down.
