Difference in “today’s kids vs “back in my day” folks:
-They have almost the entirety of the world’s knowledge in their phone.
-Live in and relish a diverse world
-Understand technology and know how to use it.
-Have more diverse heroes from which to draw strength on personal identity.
-Whilst we have been lazily saying “this will never change”, they have been taking part in ‘active shooter drills’, which seem to have often led to them contemplating their own deaths with regularity...
...from a very young age
-Pretty much their whole lives, they have been maligned as lazy, disrespectful, and not very smart
-Are right now watching as the “back in my day” folks take away their friends, neighbors and community members via ICE
-Are being forced to decide how to go about achieving the American Dream in the context of a lifetime of school loans that could cripple their chance at what their grandparents thought was central to it: home ownership
-These kids live in one of the states projected to be the first to critically feel the effects of climate change as the same adults do nothing.
-Because of access to information, they have probably learned about several religions, not just one. Could have a variety of impacts.
-Flint water problem for considerable part of their existence. Another problem adults won’t solve.
-War between have/have-nots in their face constantly. Inequity losing this year, in particular, but at its worst in 100 years.
-They were willing to loudly call BS on lunacy when the rest of us weren’t.
