Why I like the EU..
1 In.the 90.s my company produced a continuous monitor to measure gas emmisions from power stations, boilers, incinerators etc. They were emmitting large quantities on Nox Sox CO and other toxic gases in gr8 quantities..

2 We had a good product and the environment was a big issue and the UK had limits but we could not sell any. WHY
The UK law had no enforcement All the operators needed to do was check the Emmissions every few months and between the checks toxic gas emmisions was not measured

3 in 2000 the EU brought out the Waste Incineration Directive WID.
It harmonised all the limits and standards from all EU countries but went much further. It was very well written technically and really had strong enforcement.

4 Under WID plants had to monitor Emmission 24/7, monitoring equipment had to be calibrated every day..it stated that
If Emmission were above limits
OR monitor failed calibration OR not working the PLANT MUST CLOSE..
This made a huge difference

5 Our business grew in the UK and all round the EU.
Not only did plants install and maintain our monitors but they also spent money on clean up plant to make sure they were within limits. Made a huge difference to the air we breathe from those chimneys

6 Why was the EU able to produce such a strong law.?
Because individual countries would be accused costing it's industry especially if the neighbouring country did not have the same law.
The EU had the will and expertise to produce this law.

7 If the UK is allowed to simply say they will follow the EU directive I fear they will say publically that our limits are the same as the EU, but ignore the enforcement thus going back to poor air of the 90,s
I believe that a lot of EU laws will be the same standard.

8 My old company grew much larger selling throughout the EU however
IF we have tarrifs on parts brought in from EU and on products out to EU business will shrink
IF the UK does not enforce WID business will close .

9 As the business grew quickly we were unable to find trained engineers which we needed and we hired to excellent guys from Poland one of them is now service manager and they were a major influence on our success.
