Earlier this week I was accused of virtue signaling by a prominent Very Serious Journalist.

In turn, I suggest we talk about vice-signaling.
How not caring about injustices is the appropriate position to take, in their world, if you want to be taken seriously. Only losers care about stuff.
my virtue signaling was opening an essay with statements about the racist nature of IQ. The function of that essay was to shift from that realization to how prosecutors are using it to kill people.
but for Very Serious Journalist it was just me saying I was on the right team ...
such writers "vice signal." They say - I don't care about who is hurt or not, I'm just reporting the facts ... as a way of demonstrating their Very Serious status.
It's an offshoot of the should journalism be objective debate.
In which it's possible for the reporter to distance themselves from the thing which they are reporting. There are contexts perhaps, in which that's possible. But not when discussing bigotry and oppression. To try and not take a position is to take a position.
Anyway, I've been sitting my thoughts about "vice signaling" for a couple of days and wanted to get them out. Thanks for listening.
