Per popular request, I will be telling the story of my run in with Martin Shkreli on this website the day after #FCOTY results last year which resulted in me being doxxed.
It started with this tweet that I sent after seeing that Shkreli had followed me. He had won the #FCOTY the prior year but due to legal circumstances at the time apparently did not see it. https://twitter.com/fed_speak/status/811566318419845120
Upon hearing that he had won a poll that called him a charlatan, Martin became unhappy.
After a back and forth with me he posted this message on 4chan putting a bounty on my head in the hacker community to doxx this account.
This, predictably, lead to me being quickly outed as I had become pretty sloppy with keeping the account anonymous as it mattered much less in my line of work than it had.
Martin sent a tweet to me asking what I thought of the stock of the public company that is my current employer...which clearly let me know that he knew who I was.
At this point I was in a meeting which I excused myself from and returned to my office and closed the door as I knew a shitstorm was about to ensue. It did.
Shkreli bought the domain name with my full name and published a website with screenshots of my LinkedIn profile with his commentary added.
Knowing I was a target of a pool of hackers I changed all my passwords and went to 2 factor authentication everywhere possible.
By time I finished that I checked Martin’s twitter feed to see that he was live streaming a call with one of the Managing Directors at my previous firm which was an asset manager. Martin asked lots of questions about me while pretending to be interested in their hedge fund.
I’m sitting in my office watching this live stream while seeing my mentions column in tweetdeck spin like a roulette wheel. The call lasted for well over an hour with my unsuspecting MD thinking he’s got a big fish on the line.
After Shkreli posts the link to the website he has made with all my info, I decide to simply RT it and run with it. When I made my twitter account years ago it needed to be anonymous for compliance reasons but there was really no reason for that anymore.
Marty and I had a discussion about his lack of understanding re: the concept of a compliance department which I enjoyed. He did not.
I provided my whole background in a series of tweets soon after. Really not that exciting tbh but it’s on my feed from last December if you care.
It really was a wild day. I locked myself in my office for hours as my story unfolded on twitter. Had finance reporters asking for interviews and podcast appearances. Multiple articles surfaced about the whole indicent.
Here’s one that marketwatch wrote https://www.marketwatch.com/amp/story/guid/5344D41A-C7B5-11E6-8F68-B8977F716B7C
Forgot the mention, after Martin and my former MD hung up, I called him to explain. Needless to say, his mind was blown by the whole situation. We both had a good laugh and I ended up getting beers with my old colleagues to retell the story later that day. Many laughs were had.
The story ends with me being happily employed in an internal consulting/corp finance role and Martin being perma-banned from this website (although the ban was unrelated to my incident with him). Oh, and also in jail.
I hope you enjoyed this tweetstorm. Was fun to reminisce a year removed. #FCOTY
