Today is #HumanRightsDay and the first day of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ 70th year. Now that’s something to celebrate!
Today is #HumanRightsDay marking the 69th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We should mark some of the key figures who built the human rights movement. First up Rene Cassin https://rightsinfo.org/remembering-rene-cassin-father-universal-declaration-human-rights/
A second key figure for #HumanRightsDay is Eleanor Roosevelt, U.S. First Lady and chair of the drafting committee. Her legacy is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, now entering its 70th year https://rightsinfo.org/eleanor-roosevelt-first-lady-of-the-world/
A third key figure in human rights history is Hersch Lauterpacht. Professor @philippesands explains why #HumanRightDay
A fourth key figure in the modern human rights movement was a controversial one with a mixed #humanrights record - Winston Churchill https://rightsinfo.org/churchills-fight-human-rights/ #HumanRightDay
A fifth key figure in human rights history - and another Conservative - was David Maxwell Fyfe, who was central to drafting the Human Rights Convention

Now let's move on to the rights themselves!

Article 2 is the right to life. No right is more important - not much point having human rights if our lives aren't protected #HumanRightsDay
The right not to be tortured or inhumanly treated - Article 3. A key right particularly in illiberal states where state-sanctioned torture is comment, but also relevant in the UK #HumanRightsDay
The right not to be enslaved, Article 4. Sadly not a thing of the distance past - tens of millions of people are enslaved right now worldwide, and even right here in the UK #HumanRightsDay
Next up is the right to liberty. The state can't imprison us arbitrarily. That's pretty important! Really crucial in prison, immigration detention and mental health detention contexts #HumanRightsDay
The right to a fair trial is Article 6. By far the right most successfully invoked in cases before the Human Rights Court. That's because in illiberal societies, the rule of law is a key to enforcing other rights #HumanRightsDay
