I think there are degrees. I think marketers/propagandists/clickbaiting scum know what they're doing.

Seems more plausible that no, they really don't get it. Most people really do not have any grasp of statistical inference.
Lemme stop you there, man. You're wrong. Verbal fluency/appearing smart is way way WAY different from this kind of intelligence.
As an ex-math professor, I assure you that even most bright people are very limited in this department.
They can deploy it where it's immediately obvious but they can't understand most implications.
