Cities need more ground-oriented housing forms, what I call #gentledensity & @OpticosDesign calls the #missingmiddle.
I don’t know about you, but I often can’t decide what I prefer to call the attached housing form shown in these pictures. I often use “rowhouse” & “townhouse” interchangeably. In Australia they call them “terrace houses.” What do YOU prefer calling them? #GentleDensity
In some places the difference between rowhouse & townhouse is regional. Terraced house is used in UK/Aus/NZ/Commonwealth (altho Canada doesn’t use it). Others are suggesting the diff is strata/condo vs freehold, or even price-point. In Canada I think it’s preference. Thoughts?
VOTE: Are they rowhouses, townhouses, or terrace houses? Is there one term u like best? Used interchangeably? Universally agreed-to differences between each of these? Too much disagreement on the differences? Read this thread & the many interesting replies, & then vote & comment.
It’s particularly interesting when two people from the same general region separately give the exact opposite interpretation on the difference between rowhouses & townhouses, with equal certainty & conviction... #gentledensity
What are the best examples you've seen of #GentleDensity or the #MissingMiddle? Sharing examples makes all our work easier. #densitydonewell
1 of the best historical models of #GentleDensity - rowhouses & streets as places in #Copenhagen's "Potato Rows."
#GentleDensity isn't just about #climatechange & #carbonfootprint - it's about housing choice, aging in place, diverse neighbourhoods etc...
