Oh hi there. It’s me Imani Gandy aka @AngryBlackLady. Since it’s Black History Month, I thought I’d give you a little background on my column Angry Black Lady Chronicles and how it came to be and to share some of my favorite Black people-related columns.
But first: Did you know that I named it that because I have a pituitary tumor which made my hormone go bananas and made me get really angry at really small things like a suitcase that wouldn’t close? It’s true.
I started the blog in 2011 after I left private practice and turned my attention to things that were making me angry besides my pituitary tumor—things like reproductive injustice. @rewirenewsgroup hired me in 2013, and began publishing my blog in 2014. https://rewirenewsgroup.com/ablc/2014/09/17/well-hello-angry-black-lady/
So here’s the thing about me: I like to argue with people. A lot. But I found myself arguing about the same things over and over—so I wrote articles I could toss into people's mentions and keep it moving. Spite journalism. It’s a thing!
I wrote a piece in which I explain that no, Margaret Sanger wasn’t trying to exterminate Black people. (The article won me an award from PPFA in 2016. I went to the gala in D.C. with my work wife @hegemommy. Look how cute we are!)
I angry-typed this next one in 2013 because I was tired of hearing anti-choicers whinge about how abortion is just like slavery when it’s not. Slavery is like slavery.
One of my primary goals is to break down legal concepts so that people who had the common sense not to go to law school can not only understand them, but then use my writing to argue with their racist uncles.
So that’s that! If you have any questions about #ABLC or me, feel free to hit me up on my personal account @AngryBlackLady. And Happy Black History Month!
