Good news, the £20/w is not ending next month. But that was never going to happen because unemployment now rising. But it will still be high in 6 months - so will be in same situation then. 12 month extension makes much more sense to protect from Covid income hit... https://twitter.com/Peston/status/1362765114647212033
But why do we have to have £20 boost in first place? Because safety net in UK is too low in the first place. Should consider permanent extension - yes it'll cost £6bn+ a year, but society has responsibility to provide a basic income. £75/w = one of lowest rates in OECD!
So we'll be arguing over £3bn of support for lowest income families this year (presumably because of the cost?). While the US is taking no chances with its stimulus... We're falling back into austerity, but it's no longer in fashion! https://twitter.com/carsjung/status/1361982894126878720?s=19
As a reminder we've spent £80bn+ on JRS etc. So why not £3bn more next year to support 30% of claimants in more debt since covid started? Government offered great support at start of pandemic, don't mess it up now. https://www.resolutionfoundation.org/publications/the-debts-that-divide-us/
