#Mariner4 flew past #Mars on July 14, 1965, providing the 1st close-up photographs of another planet.

This 1st close-up image ever taken of Mars shows an area about 330 km across by 1200 km from limb to bottom of frame, centered at 37 N, 187 W.

The area is near the boundary of Elysium Planitia to the west and Arcadia Planitia to the east.

The hazy area barely visible above the limb on the left side of the image may be clouds. The resolution of this image is roughly 5 km and north is up.

#Mariner3, the other identical spacecraft, was launched on Nov 5, 1964, but the shroud encasing spacecraft atop its rocket failed to open properly, dooming the mission.

Pictures, gradually played back to #Earth from a small tape recorder on the probe, showed impact #craters.

#Mariner4 provided radically more accurate data about the planet, that meant redesigns for then planned #Martian #landers, and showed life would have a more difficult time surviving there than previously anticipated.
