This image is being shared again as a portrait of George Moses Horton. It is not Horton: it is a photo of Martin Delany. Unfortunately, there are no known images of Horton. And yet, this same image is repeatedly used online and cited as an photo of Horton. (1/4)
Martin Delany (1882-1885) was a writer and newspaper editor from Virginia and became the first Black Major in the U.S. Army. While he was a contemporary of Horton's, they had no known connections. https://encyclopediavirginia.org/entries/delany-martin-r-1812-1885/ (2/4)
It's a mystery how the photo came to be used as Horton, but it's also an example of how misinformation (even well-intentioned) can persist online. Google Horton's name and you'll find many examples of the Delany photo. (3/4)
