The government needs to ensure the environmental value of our low lying coastal and river plains is properly recognised in the planning system and given the same priority as subjective characteristics such as landscape value. This would produce a win/win climate change mitigation
Reducing building on low lying coastal and river plains would reduce the number of homeowners put at future flood risk AND create space for more CO2 absorbing wetlands. Time to reset planning priorities.
UK wetland habitats were once extensive. However drainage, agricultural expansion, peat extraction & urban development on flood plains have reduced their extent. UK Wetlands Carbon storage has received relatively little attention until recently http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/file/1438141#page23
