We have all heard the phrase "people don't leave bad jobs, they leave bad bosses". It is a generalisation but rings true in many ways within the Army. However people are not always in a position to leave the org instead many suffer in silence ...
In a ranked structure such as ours the conditions are set that toxic personnel can go either unaware or unchecked while poorly influencing those around them. Sometimes overtly and soemtimes covertly ...
So while a compassionate, well considered leader can be a force multiplier, inspiring those around them to work hard and put the organisation first ....
Others can bring a team to its knees both in morale and performance. Often undermining trust is at the centre of their effect ...
It's easy for us to say "do something about it" but we are often faced with two hard truths. You tackle the situation, it gets worse, you alienate yourself from your bosses and lose the rank battle, don't promote OR you weather the storm and wait for personalities to change...
So essentially we are still being dragged down by poor leadership at many levels from those who should be the beacon of it ...
Just remember people don't come to work to feel like shit, lets try and enthuse rather than disenfranchise them and maybe, just maybe you won't have people consistently weighing up their options.
As a caveat this isn't necessarily a personal issue, just observations over a period of time.
