Today, Ashleigh (a young person we work with) and @SamTrner speak about the use of #UnregulatedAccommodation in the childrenâs care system.

It comes as the govt announces a ban on the use of #UnregulatedAccommodation for under-16s, following a year-long consultation.
But as our Interim CEO @VicLanger will share live on @SkyNews at 8:20am today, these proposals are not in young peopleâs best interests.

The government has failed to listen to young #CareExperienced people and the lack of security, stability and support they have experienced in #UnregulatedAccommodation.
Under the government's plan, over 6,000 children will continue to be denied the care they deserve.
Under the government's plan, over 6,000 children will continue to be denied the care they deserve.
Creating a separate set of national standards will formalise a 'two-tier' care system for 16-17-year-olds, guaranteeing 'care' to those in foster care or children's homes but not to their peers in semi-independent and independent settings (aka #UnregulatedAccommodation).
The Govt claims that #UnregulatedAccommodation for 16-17-year-olds is a helpful step towards independence.
But evidence shows this isnât how itâs being used for those seeking asylum and those who have only recently come into care, who need typically needs more, not less support.

All children deserve care until they are 18, in places which can adapt to suit their changing needs as they move towards early adulthood.
Nonetheless, we welcome the commitment of additional investment in local authorities to create more spaces in childrenâs homes.

...This is a root cause of the systemâs over-reliance on unregulated settings - and in our own response to the government consultation, we called for a concerted effort to tackle it.
Especially as the care system looks after more children, and more older teenagers in particular.

Itâs essential the #CareReview proposes sustainable long-term solutions to address this issue now and build capacity in the system for the years ahead.
